Choosing Between an ERP Product and Custom Software

Off-the-shelf ERP is cheaper to start and harder to bend. Here is how to decide which side of that trade-off your business belongs on.

The real question

The choice is rarely about features. Most ERP products cover the same ground. The question is whether your competitive advantage lives in a process the product cannot model.

When a product wins

  • Your processes are standard for your industry
  • You need to be live in weeks, not months
  • You have no team to own a custom system long term

When custom wins

  • Your costing, production or approval rules are genuinely unusual
  • You are already paying for heavy customisation of a product
  • Integration with existing systems is the main cost driver

A practical middle path

Many of our clients run a standard finance core and build custom only where the business is different. That keeps the expensive, slow-moving parts on a supported product and the fast-moving parts under your own control.

If any of the above applies to a system you are running, we are happy to look at it with you.
